Choosing the Right Warranty
Lifetime warranty can be a good choice if it had a good duration and a non-prorated clause. Remember whose lifetime is it anyways? Is it the manufacturers or your lifetime of ownership of the product? That’s why the consumer must read the fine print and notice the length of the warranty as well as what is covered.
There are many lifetime warranties that are actually only covered for a lifetime of 10 years and it is prorated. How about that for a warranty. It is only the length of the coverage that is important. If the warranty is defining the insulated glass portion for 20 years but is only covered at 25% after the 5th year for example then this would not be an adequate protection.
So many times the old fashioned fixed 25 or 50-year warranties that are non-pro rated have the best coverage’s. They give you the exact years that is provided and many times do not have as many limitations and perorations.
Finally one last point to remember the warranty is only as good as the firm backing it up. If the manufacturer has only been in business for a few years and is ready provide a great big warranty the use caution. I believe a rule of thumb is that a company should be older than the warranty that they are providing because they have the proven track record. A final note is to make sure that the warranty has a transferable clause.
