Choosing Replacement Windows

There are a few important factors in choosing replacement windows for your home. The first consideration is selecting the right Window Company to work on your home. A consumer should make sure the company is properly insured and licensed. The proper insurance requirement varies from state to state.

The firm should carry both workman’s compensation and liability insurance as well as vehicle coverage. In addition there should also be a bonding policy, which is a protection against theft of property and guarantees the completion of the full amount of the job. If the contractor needs a permit the village normally requires the company to be licensed, bonded and insured.

In addition to the company fulfilling the insurance obligations, they should furnish the homeowner with a sufficient amount of references. The consumer should call these people and conduct a brief survey concerning installation, timeliness of job completion and generally if they were satisfied with whole process of their home improvement. The final point in the selecting the right replacement window company would be to check out the status with the BBB and other consumer organizations.

The next factor in selection of windows would be product choice. If the goal were to invest in a maintenance free window that requires no painting and ease of cleaning and operating then the vinyl window would be the appropriate decision. The colors are usually limited to white or beige but recently vinyl window manufacturers have introduced laminated wood interiors with custom painted exteriors. This has broadened the market for consumers desiring more color choices while maintaining the vinyl window integrity of reducing maintenance.

If the color needs are not met with the vinyl replacement window then the proper choice might be the wood windows. These windows have wood interior that you can paint or stain whatever your heart desires. The exterior is usually claded or covered with vinyl or aluminum in a multitude of colors. They are fairly easy to operate by pulling the windows in to clean. The vinyl windows have tilt in release buttons, which makes it easier to clean then the wood windows that usually pull in from the side jambs.

The fiberglass replacement window has made a slow entry into the window market. These are comparable to the vinyl windows with low maintenance. The added benefit would be the ability to paint the interior of the fiberglass frame. This is similar to the fiberglass entry door that is stainable or paintable but usually from the factory. These windows are actually a composite of wood and fiberglass materials. The jury is still out being a relatively new window concept.

Once the consumer has selected the replacement window it is important to research the manufacturer. How long has the company been in business? Do they provide an extensive long-term non-prorated warranty? It sounds good to have a lifetime warranty but whose lifetime. I believe it is better to translate this into real years. Read the fine print. A lifetime warranty can state 10 years or the lifetime of the owner. It still could be a prorated warranty. This means that the percent of coverage goes down as the duration increases. For example the Insulated glass warranty can cover 100% the first 5 years and slide down to 5% the next 5 years. Also see if warranty includes transferability. If you sell the house the next homeowner can assume the agreement. Also see if there is a cost to the transfer. Glass Breakage is another feature that is showing up on replacement window warranties. This can cover accidental breakage of glass as well as other damage possibly caused by hail, etc.

Finally we should put all of these factors into the consideration of the right replacement window. It is important to select a reputable company as well as the appropriate product to fit your needs and lifestyle.
