Frequently Asked Questions - Replacement Windows

How are Replacement Windows Installed?

Answer:

Replacement Windows should be measured to fit the opening. The vinyl windows in particular are custom made to fit the openings. They are manufactured usually every ¼ inch in width and height. There are certain height and width requirements for each particular style of window. For example The Double Hung Window is usually restricted to a height of 80 inches and a maximum width of 50 inches.

The Bow Window can actually be made up to 12 feet in width and about 6 feet in height. These particular windows must be installed with precision. They have to be anchored properly into the jamb and in most cases should be fastened with a cable system provided by the manufacturer into the header or upper beam of window. This will ensure that the window will not sag and provide extra stability. The roof system can be either a hip roof or shed type roof and if there is an existing overhang or soffit area covers window then you can just flash right up to soffit.

The remaining window styles such as Double Hungs, casements and picture windows are installed the same way. They are screwed into the jamb and if needed stops or decorative molding are applied around inside of window and also occasionally the exterior. If the original opening was aluminum or steel pan then a more detailed installation is required. These have to be removed and a new wood jamb must be installed for the window to be fastened to. Then there are usually moldings installed around window and casing if necessary.

The final touch to the installation procedure and just as important is the finishing of the exterior. There will be exposed molding on the exterior of the window when replaced. The installer should use a PVC aluminum trim coil to wrap around the outside wood. Then finally a nice thin bead of caulk is usually applied around the framing. This process defines a quality installation.

It's not enough to see the window from a distance.
